Closing out the season on Saturday 11th May is none other than our Shuswap veterans: Birchbark! Birchbark are a band who have been performing in the area since around 1995, with the members having collaborated musically for over 30 years! With this experience brings an extensive and most excellent repertoire of originals and covers, often tied to beautiful life experiences and stories. Prepare yourselves for a healthy mix of instruments, spanning across multiple genres from Bluegrass to Swing, Folk and Celtic. With Jean Brighouse on upright-bass, Richard Owings on violin & guitar, Alan Bates on guitar and Sue Kyle on guitar, banjo, penny whistle, bodrhan and whatever else she can get her hands on, Birchbark are sure to bring a joyous farewell to the 2018-2019 Coffeehouse season. In other very exciting news, the Sunnybrae Community Association will be throwing a fundraiser event on Saturday 25th May, so please mark your calendars, book your babysitters and get yourselves ready for “Swing into Spring!”: an evening of live music and dance with Salmon Arm’s “The Ghost Notes”. With Willy Gaw and Darren Herting on guitar, Mike Scharf on saxophone and Bill Lockie on upright-bass, this incredibly talented quartet are no strangers to the downtown Jazz scene of the Shuswap. Expect no less than high energy Swing and Hot Club Jazz music (think Django Reinhardt), a hugely welcoming vibe and absolutely no previous dance experience necessary! There will be a cash bar serving beer, local wine (sorry no minors at this event) and nibbles, and a by-donation Safe Ride Home can be arranged by calling 250 835 8696; a service very kindly provided by the Tappen Sunnybrae Fire Department. There will also be a cash raffle-draw going on too so if winning prizes whilst also supporting your local Community Association is your thing… you’re in luck! Tickets for this event are $15 and will be available at Acorn Music, Shuswap Pie Company, Hudson Vintage, the Tappen Co-op, and at the doors. Doors open at 6:30pm with the band opening for the evening at 7:30pm.
